Er spielt als offensiver Mittelfeldspieler und hat 57 Länderspiele und 5 Tore für die schottische Mannschaft . Er nahm an der Weltmeisterschaft 1990 , dem Euro 1992 und dem Euro 1996 teil .
Es ist Teil des Teams Liverpool von Gerard Houllier , das 2001 fünf Trophäen gewann ( Pokal UEFA , Europäischer Superpokal , FA Cup , Ligapokal und Charity Shield ).
